LIBRE: the art of being

A contemporary art exhibition featuring sixteen international and Australian artists.

Inspired by the 2025 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival theme - ‘Free to be’, it celebrates and showcases diverse expressions of LGBTQI+ and allies’ identities.

The exhibition theme - ‘LIBRE, the art of being’ sought to explore the concept of freedom from different artistic perspectives. It was important to have both queer voices and allies, from different places and times to give a truely expansive view of what freedom looks like today.

My curatorial approach emphasises the importance of individual voices while also highlighting the power of collective action in the quest for freedom. The artists were selected for their diverse backgrounds, artistic practice, their self expression and exploration of identity. Many of the artists identify as being part of the LGBTQIA+ communities. All artists come together in this exhibition to challenge conventional understandings of personal and societal freedom.

The works on display engage with themes of liberation, autonomy, self expression, pushing boundaries and offering new perspectives on what it means to "be free."
